Spacewalk # 35 with Josh McClintock a.k.a Curious Josh
Friday Nov 02, 2018
Friday Nov 02, 2018
Welcome to episode # 35 of Spacewalk Radio! Today we bring you a special dedicated mix by our good friend Josh McClintock a.k.a. Curious Josh! Fresh from his archives is a mix compiled back in 2002 using 2 technique turntables, a Numark mixer and vinyl records. The mix was digitized by his friend Anthony from AnMLA Recordings and we are humbled and excited that Josh has allowed us to share it with all of you!!
Now here is a little more info on Josh: 😊
Josh McClintock (Curious Josh, Joshua,Josh from NY) started DJing in the summer of '91. He has remained vinyl only.. even after all these years.. but realizes that good music is good music no matter what the format. Hugely inspired by West coast legends Doc Martin, Barry Weaver, Mr Buzz (Acid Hits), and the Wicked Crew he fell in love with the underground acid house sound and would push this theme forward in his sets. The first party he spun at was a going away party for Ron D Core in '92. A residency at Middle Earth (along with Dj's Markem X, David Alvarado, Frank C, and Tom Stimuli) followed later that year. But it wasn't until he started to release his "Acid Junky" mixtape series simfonik.com/2011/02/josh-mccli…-acid-junky-vol-1/ that his Djing really started to take off. These mixes got him gigs all over Los Angeles and San Diego as well as opening up for Doc Martin @ "Unlock the House". Anmrecs1 – Josh-mclintock-uth-october1995 In 1996 he left Los Angeles and moved to NY to be near his family. During his first years there his collection doubled thanks to stores like Satellite Records, Sonic Groove, Temple, Disco Rama, Throb, and Dance Trax. He was also getting records from WAX Records in Los Angeles (from his good friends Juan Nunez and Little Chris), as well as straight from Doc Martin. Gigs were scarce though for Josh in NY. He would still fly back occasionally to play parties such as "Free Thinking", "WAX", and "Sublevel". In 2001 he had a year long residency at a little place in the Village called "TRIBE" but other than that it was just caveman style solo sessions at his little apartment in Spanish Harlem. Many epic sets were recorded during this time and he really came into his own style and matured as a DJ. In 2008 his job asked him to help open a new location in Beverly Hills and moved him back out west. He immediately reimmersed himself in the L.A. underground. And thanks to parties like Sarcastic Disco, Sublevel, Making Shapes....and especially Sunny Side Up and MFD...his love for dance music was reaffirmed. It was also during this time that he was introduced to the slower chuggy blissed out music that was being played at these parties. He had been experimenting with downtempo music in NY over the years and had always loved ethereal balearic sounding music even in highschool (The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive) He began to incorporate this sound into his sets giving him a more eclectic feel. In 2010 he moved back out to L.A. for good and was very busy in the scene from 2010- 2015 Highlight sets at parties such as Sunny Side Up, FutureHouse, MFD, Downtown, Secret Cinema, Hang Together, Rice n Beats, Devotion, Bionic (SF), 5 Star Bar,Space Walk, We Are Monsters SF, The Dusk Josh-from-ny – The-dusk-the-glowing-at-the-hearts-lantern ,@ JACK (Opening for Psychmagik and Brett Johnson). Josh-from-ny – Josh-mcclintock-jack-2-3-9-13 ,Mount Analogue's "Nuit Noire" (Opening for Legowelt, Xosar, D'Marc Cantu, and Willie Burns) Josh-from-ny – Josh-mcclintock-nuit-noire-vi as well as some excellent adventures to KUCI's "Rider's of the Plastic Groove" and a couple live sets at Amoeba Josh-from-ny – Live-at-amoeba-102314 ...and finally culminating in being blessed with opening for his hero and mentor Doc Martin and the Legend DJ Pierre at the Sublevel Halloween Party in Oct. 2013 where he played the greatest set of his life. Eternally grateful to Martin Mendoza for the opportunity. More than anything though..Josh likes to create mixes. He will spend months on a single recording. Searching for the perfect tracks to complement each other and then string them along so they play out like a story. Usually with a dreamy intro and an epic finish.

Hope you enjoy the show and here's some more information on the man himself:
L.A based Blakkat AKA Mark Bell has moved through the music world applying his golden touch to many surfaces. From a life with the major labels to the finest in underground house music clubs, the man places a stamp of quality on all that he touches.
Never losing touch with the underground, Mark has been a featured vocalist for King Britt’s Sylk 130 Project as well as for Funk D’ Void and released on Josh Wink’s seminal Ovum label. It was in conjunction with the Philadelphia label that he produced his biggest underground hit to date, the massive Tweek & Roll single with label boss Wink.
Continuing to put out quality material, today’s label bosses frequently turn to Blakkat for dance floor killers, with his tracks remixed by today’s hottest underground names, such as KINK, Agnes and Manuel Tur. Add this to a CV that already includes the celebrated results of studio sessions with Felix Da Housecat, Josh Wink, DJ Sneak and Marshall Jefferson, while Chez Damier, Zero 7, Jamiroqui, Wyclef Jean, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Jungle Brothers have all received his remix treatment. Blakkat productions have been remixed by David Morales, Basement Jazz, Todd Terry, Steve Bug and Armand Van Helden. Balancing this output with his own projects, Mark runs his own label Shaboom as an outlet for his own talents. It is Mark’s ability to turn in classically influenced modern house that distinguishes a Blakkat jam. Whether it be raw Chicago acid or smooth New York deepness, his assured production guarantees Mark’s tracks will move a room. The timeless quality of his work is evident in all he does, with his DJ sets referencing the past 25 years of house music with a modern, infectious twist. Regular appearances at Doc Martin’s legendary Sub Level parties best show his skills, always rocking a fiercely loyal and knowledgeable crowd.
This talent has seen Mark break into the international circuit, working the floor at some of the world’s hottest clubs. Whether as a DJ or Live act, clubs such as PS1 (New York), Fabric (London), Revival (Los Angeles), Avalon (New York) Opium (Miami) The Gathering (San Francisco), Back 2 Basics (Leeds UK) Vanguard (Los Angeles), Sunset (San Francisco), Turbo (Toronto), Paradiso (Amserdam), Metropolis (Berlin), The End (London) Renaissance (Global) and Circus (Liverpool).
An original member of multi-platinum selling Mercury Prize winners M People, Mark Bell was signed as a solo artist to Atlantic Records, Hollwood Records, Warners, BMG and Sony, but it is his desire to rock dance floors and gain a real connection with crowds that is driving behind the decks at the best underground spots around. Placing Blakkat in the hottest clubs around will be Barcelona based Common People. He will build on this partnership further through various projects with the boys from Spain.

Please visit your local on line retail stores and download the "Fort Nightly" album by Iz & Diz, that shit is HEAT!!!! Hope you enjoy the show and here's some more infomation on the man himself:
If life is about "being in the right place at the right time," then Diz's timing could not have been better. Born and raised in Chicago, the original epicenter of the House Music uni-verse, his adolescence coincided with the beginnings of that city's legendary scene. Nowadays, if you mention Diz's name amongst House aficionados, you are almost cer-tain to hear adoration and respect for his insane DJ skills, stage presence, and warm-hearted personality.
Diz's musical influences started at home, where his mother's love for Jazz led him to pursue the saxophone for many years. His DJ beginnings were about whatever he could get his hands on, like Disco and old Breaks records inherited from family members. When he was 14, his older brother took him to The Music Box, where Diz witnessed the true potential of House Music: to affect people's emotions and bring them together on a collective journey. He's been striving to do just that ever since, and in the process, has become a faithful participant in the music, the culture, and the times.
Throughout high school, he frequented parties featuring DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Farley and many other masters, and finally had a chance to break into the scene at age 19 after meeting contemporaries Mark Farina, Derrick Carter and Spencer Kincey (Gemini). His early gigs were at Alcazar with Gemini, and at one-off parties. At his Wicker Park loft, what started as a means of paying the rent developed into a two-year run as a nightclub, featuring Diz, Farina and Mark Grant on the decks. Soon after-wards, he and his friends took over Shelter, one of the city's "most severe night spots." >From roughly 1993-98, Diz was the Friday resident at Shelter, and the Saturday resi-dent at Red Dog alongside Johnny Fiasco, and since then has held many residencies at other legendary Chicago spots.
In 1995, Diz accepted a job working for his brother's friend, Anthony Pearson (Chez Damier), at PRESCRIPTION (the label founded by Chez and Ron Trent). PRESCRIP-TION conducted distribution business with CAJUAL, and that is how Diz met his future producing partner and close friend, Joshua (whose nickname as fate would have it, was "Iz").
In 1995, Iz n Diz produced their first record together, "Ghosts in Detroit," released on PRESCRIPTION's sub-label, BALANCE. A year later, Joshua/Iz moved back to San Francisco, but he and Diz maintained a close friendship over the years and continue to produce together for labels like CLASSIC, AESOTERIC, GUIDANCE, TWEEKIN', SIL-VER NETWORK, and PANHANDLE.
